Subject:La homa specio bezonas ĉiujn talentulojn
Time:6:52 pm.
African Institute for Mathematical Sciences - AIMS). Majkel Grifin].

Ankaŭ ĉi tie.

First of all thank you very much for allowing me to join this community; I'm looking forward to getting to know people here.

Secondly, a bit about myself. I'm 34 and I don't actually know if I have Aspergers or ADHD, but I am definitely somewhere on the spectrum, with confusion concerning the world about me at times. If a room is rearranged I'm confused for about a week and keep bumping into things that used to be in another place and I suffer irrational mood swings. I become obsessed with activities and interests for a while before becoming obsessed with something else.

I have a severely autistic son, and discovered that there is a rogue gene causing autism and similar in my family after my nephew was also diagnosed with autism. My sister, mother and father are also mildly autistic/aspergers/ADHD as is one of my cousins. After my son's diagnosis we were informed that there was a possible genetic link, and it appears that there really is! This fascinates me and I was wondering if anybody else here has that genetic link present in their family?

I'm interested to know about other people here with stories like mine, and to hear from anyone who experiences the same issues that I do. Sometimes I feel as though I'm going mad or must be crazy and it's a comfort to know that I'm really not alone.

So all of us know that feeling of NEEDING to provide information on various subjects. I know we do it with our perseverations of the moment, but I am unsure whether we have documented the fact that we don't limit this to perseverations. For example, when I know something that might interest someone, or not even interest them, but relate to them in some way, I MUST tell them. This is useful when I find out someone's favorite band is playing. I tell them and they are excited, even if I don't know them very well. It is something that must be done.
This gets me in trouble at times like tonight, when I told someone about what appeared to be an unexpected new romantic relationship that formed. The person I told knew both the people involved, so I thought it was relevant. Apparently what I did is akin to gossip. I feel very bad about having done this, as it turned out I was factually incorrect. But if I were equally certain and the situation presented itself again, I would probably do the same thing without remorse, until someone said their feelings were hurt as a result.
Do the rest of you do this? I guess the word for it is "gossip" but that word connotes people who enjoy the drama of soap operas, rather than people being compelled by the connections that exist between two things. I would never enjoy hearing about, say, Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz, nor would I bother to tell someone about celebrities unless I knew they were really into that sort of thing. But, when it's data about friends, it seems like it would be extremely interesting to anyone even peripherally involved.

I know this is one reason so many Aspies use LJ. We have information that needs to be expressed, and this is a good way to do so. I originally got mine because I knew it would be more efficient to tell each story one time, on the internet, instead of 12 times to 12 separate people in person.

So, some of y'all may remember my post of about a month ago, telling you that I'd be writing an entry regarding a ten year old boy I'd met at the New England TASH conference, whose parents were looking for help vis a vis the school department, with regards to his use of facilitated communication. I'd like to invite you all to read and comment, as I really feel a pull to help this family. I believe that we can figure out some way to help, collectively, or if nothing else, get people talking about facilitated communication (kind of ironic, perhaps) and assuming competence rather than incompetence, etc. I've seen amazing things happen here in our community, and I'd love to see it happen again. I've posted the link so as to encourage people to comment there rather than here in order to keep things streamlined, though if you'd feel more comfortable, you may comment here, of course (perhaps I should screen comments? We shall see.)

Anyway, please check it out. Matthew is a wonderful person who very much deserves our attention and help.

Thank you in advance!

Subject:Book-- Nerds: Who They Are and Why We Need More of Them
Posted by:sr_rivka42.
Time:10:28 am.
I've come across this book in bookstores a couple of times.  It's written by a clinical child psychologist.  The premise is nice, but the treatment of AS is simply appalling.  The author takes great pains to separate "normal" nerds from "Asperger's sufferers" who are dysfunctional and impaired.  He basically argues that anyone who's at all successful in occupational and social functioning can't be AS no matter what traits they display--Bill Gates is the primary example he uses.  Basically, he tries to separate "good, functional" nerds from "Asperger's sufferers" and it's bothersome to me.  He dismisses Tony Attwood's claim that many math/engineering students and professors are on the spectrum, claiming that it's irresponsible.  What's worse, he uses John Odgen* as an example of a "real Asperger's person."  He's sympathetic to the bullying which Odgen receives, and even claims that Odgen isn't "a representative of all nerds, or even all Asperger's sufferers."  So nice of him to suggest that maybe most of us haven't killed people.  But,  then he incorporates Odgen into his criticism of Attwood, claiming that if Attwood's claims are true then "MIT and Caltech would be bloodbaths."  I don't really have the words to adequately express my feelings about this, but it would no doubt feature a string of obscenities.

Anyone else familiar with this book?  I needed a place to rant about it, so thanks for indulging me.  I just hate the way we're so often portrayed in the media--even by people who claim to be sympathetic to "nerds"!  In conclusion, this author can kiss my ass, as well as that of my possible-aspie uncle, MIT graduate.

*John Odgen is a high school student who knifed another student who bullied him, resulting in that student's death.  This tragic situation has probably been discussed here before.

Lately whenever I've been around people who don't know me very well, I start to feel slightly Stalkeresque. Because of my 'keen eye for detail' as the colloquialism goes, I tend to know far more about people than they've actually told me: like how many kids they have and when their birthday is or how many biscuits they had for lunch.
The only problem with this is that later in conversation I'll say something like: "Hey you better get to your doctors appointment, you don't want to be late!"
And the person in question will ask me how I knew they had an appointment, and I'm not sure how to answer, as most people find "You mentioned it two weeks ago while on the phone with your daughter, I was ten metres away stamping dates on bookmarks." just a teensy bit creepy.
My mother tells me that the reason people don't remember saying these things in my presence is because that to them, unless I am speaking I am essentially invisible.
I found her opinion interesting so I decided to test it.
I walked subtly up to people while they were talking and waited for them to notice, I discovered that for the most part as long as you aren't within a metre or of the people talking you are functionally non-existent- it depends on the size of the room, the position of their bodies and even how interested they are in the conversation, but I've been able to be within a foot of two people talking for around three minutes before either noticed my presence. (I'm not non-verbal but I prefer sign language and don't like announcing myself)
It would certainly explain my latent invisibility, either that or I have unknowingly developed superpowers.
What do you think?
P.S. as a result of my experiment I have developed a reputation for ninja like skills at sneaking up on people. (Which is silly, I wasn't THAT quiet.)

I don't care what people say, I loved the movie "Mozart and the Whale."  I like the book better, but the movie was a cute interpretation of it.

If you've seen it, you know the scene where she gets on the bus after their first date, and she says "call me!"  Donald gets all confused and goes "when? what time?!"  and obsesses for days afterward on when to call.

Well right now I know exactly how he feels.  I met a girl in another LJ group and we're gonna hang out when she gets into town.  She has my number, but I don't have hers, and we never set a specific time...just thursday, we'd hang out.  She'd call me when she gets into town.

Now I wish I had gotten all the details because I feel paralyzed...I can't do anything because she could call ANY MINUTE.

Ugh.  It's so stressful to socialize, I swear.

Time:2:48 pm.
Doom 4 was announced yesterday.

Doom II was the classic first-person shooter game we played in grade 10, a mix of demonic and almost Lovecraftian horror. Our school had a "computer users student organization" that would meet during lunch time, but all we did was play Doom II on the school's LAN. Up to 16 people in deathmatch! So we nicknamed it the "Doom student organization".

Many of us still play Doom II online for free using Zdaemon. I particularly enjoy the coop mode where 16 people can work together to shoot down the demons and complete a level!

Let's not forget Doom, the Roguelike for and even olderskool, rich ASCII experience!

Check out this home-made plush cacodemon!

Mood: puzzled.
I have decided that highway driving is the perfect example of a way that the NT world simply fails to make any sense at all.  You drive on the freeway and the speed limit sign says 55 so you drive 55 mph.  But NOBODY else goes 55.  Everyone else is passing you, or lining up behind you.  Your need to follow the rules to the letter tells you that you have to stick with the speed limit.  But the law is that if you have more than 5 cars behind you that you are obstructing traffic and either need to speed up or risk a ticket.  Where does this make sense???  You are breaking the law if you go faster than the speed limit, but if you go the speed limit and no one else does then you are also breaking the law.  So, What is the POINT of speed limits?  Why bother if you are going to allow society to set their own speed limits anyway?

Is this nonsensical to anyone else, or is this just something that bothers me?

I've been scoring quite high in terms of being "paranoid". I'm almost paranoid of the paranoia now. I really don't know that much about it. I just know that I'm not thinking that the CIA is tracking me per se. I remember watching "The Truman Show" with Jim Carrey (yah, I know, Jenny McCarthy and Autasm Spreks)...and sometimes entertaining the thought that something like that *could* happen. Sometimes, the things people say make me wonder but maybe they're just observant or talk to everyone I know. I know I could read the wiki on the topic but nothing gives me much of an idea of what I'm dealing with or how to deal with my "flavor" of paranoia. I was recently yelled at by a coworker who basically said something telling, he confirmed what various personality tests had been saying and that was that I am very untrusting and paranoid. Even my partner says I have almost no trust. Various people think I have some weird kind of "fear". I wonder if it's just PTSD. Anyhow, if anyone can relate or suggest how they've dealt with this, I'd really appreciate that.

Fakte mi hieraŭ aĉetis ilian fruan koncertan albumon "Under A Blood Red Sky".

Sed temis pri nova surbendigo, malgraŭ la stilaj similecoj al "The Time Of My Life", "The Promise You Made" aŭ "You're The One That I Want" (kiu fakte estas el la jaro 1977 aŭ 1978).

Ankaŭ por memorigi al mi mem, mi skribas tiajn kodojn por kelkaj ĉefaj lingvoj suben. do any of you have any phobias? or severe dislikes of something?

I have a absolute phobia of cars. most specifically, of getting hit by one. I always cross when the light's green, I look both ways,. I cross in the corner, I don't cross between cars, I don't cross if there's a bus or a truck or something big. I'd rather way til they've gone.

Anyone who's walked with me know cause I'm always telling people to wait til the light changes and if they don't and cross, I stay there til it does. I tell everyone, parents included to cross in the corner, to wait til the light changes.

I don't like passing nearby. I don't like when I'm crossing and cars don't stop, they just slow down.
I don't like when I'm crossing and cars slowly start moving.

I flinch, I move, if I'm walking with someone, I always make sure they're between the car and me. I can't help it.

and today a horrible thing happened
I was walking home, listening to music and I get to this rather busy street.
There was a protest going on or something
People with a big banner in one side, cops next to the traffic light and cars on the side.
I start to cross the street.I'm in the middle when I see a cop make a sort of sign and cart appear from behind the people, pass right next to me and cross.
I look at both cops. they disregard me.I yell "the light's green! Let me through!" they don't even look at me and more cars speed by.I am freaking out at this time. I don't know what to do.
Finally, all cars pass and I run the rest of the way to the sidewalk before the protester and the bikes and the cops reach me.
I keep running, I start crying, I have to slow down. I'm very close to home so I keep going. I have to reach into my bag for some tissues. I feel horrible, I am completely freaking out by now, sobbing, I have to take my glasses off,I feel so scared. and angry.
I just can't believe it. I was walking and then they were cars all over and I couldn't move and didn't know what to do and the cops treated me as if I was invisible. I nearly broke down in tears right there. I didn't dare running between the cars, I was far too scared for that.

I do so many stuff so I won't get hit by a car.
and something like this happens.
I've always thought that if it ever happens, it won't be my fault.
It'd something like this.

I'll go to Amsterdam for the StuTS (Student's Conference on Linguistics) in a moment and won't be back before early Monday morning. I even learned some Dutch. =)

Subject:Reta kunlaboro rezultis en 20-lingva filmo pri Esperanto
Time:8:01 am.
